Prof. Kowalski was hired at UW-Marinette in 1983 as a faculty member of the department of physical education and campus Athletic Director. She also coached volleyball and women's basketball for several years. In 1998, she became a full-time associate professor of physical education. She is the 2001 recipient of the Kaplan Fellow Award and has been very involved in creating interdisciplinary courses linking physical education with other fields of study of particular interest to education majors.
