Theatre on the Bay opens November 3 with Antigone 3
October 10, 2006
The Antigone is a timeless Greek tragedy written by Sophocles in 442 BC., about the daughter of Oedipus and her fight to bury her dishonored brother, against the edict of the new king of Thebes. It is a story that pits the law of the gods—"unwritten law"—against the laws of humankind, family ties against civic duty, and man against woman.
Beginning with his contemporaries, Euripides and Aeschylus, hundreds of playwrights have written new versions of The Antigone over the last 2,500 years. Theatre on the Bay will open its fall season with a unique combination of three contemporary settings. Princess Antigone, written by Jules Tasca, is a re-telling of the classical Greek tragic fable. Antigone in Warsaw, by Richard Sewell, is set in 1939, poised at the moment of Hitler’s invasion of Poland. Another Antigone, by playwright A.R. Gurney, is set in a twentieth century university, at the height of the Cold War and the nuclear arms race. New choral settings have been written by TOB Playwright-in-Residence and Artistic Director, Dr. Doug Larche.
“These three Antigones, spanning three millennia, will all be produced in their entirety in the same interactive two-hour evening – live and videotaped, sometimes simultaneously. A classic Greek Chorus will perform in counterpoint to modern psychological drama. Though the plays are set against the backdrop of the Theban War, World War II and the Cold War, they are very personal dramas about very personal problems,” said Larche.
Antigone 3 will feature the following actors in Princess Antigone: The role of Antigone will be played by Sabra Sipple, her sister Ismene will be played by Amberly Sikora. Tim Demuse will portray King Creon. Ricky Berlin is Haemon, Chris Thompson, Eurydice and John A. Berg, Tiresias. Choral members include Tristan Schuh, Gayle Eckstrom, Susan Vairus, Alicia Hnatuk, Becky Adams, Jared Meyers, Suzanne Christiansen, Bonnie Lee Popp, DeeAnne Pohlmann, Katie Jo Pockat, Sohregul Soltanmanmmed, David Kienitz, Yaroslava Belenko and Karen Moctezuma. Jason Larche will also appear in the Sewell and Gurney versions along with Vairus, Popp, Christiansen, Berlin, Schuh, Hnatuk and Pohlmann.
“One of the reasons that The Antigone continues to fascinate playwrights and directors 2,500 years later,” said Larche, “is that it deals with the political and personal crises people face when they value law over life and assert hubris over humanity. Greek tragedy requires the presence of a great fatal flaw. It seems that every generation sees politicians committed to their decisions merely to save face, even when it costs the lives of their countrymen and their own children.”
Antigone 3 will be presented November 3 – 5 and 10 – 12 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10 and $12 on sale at the box office beginning October 30. Box office hours are 4 – 6 pm Monday – Friday and to curtain time on show days. Call 715-735-4313 to make reservations.
