Rummage/Bake Sale December 8
November 29, 2007
A rummage/bake sale will be held Saturday, December 8 from 8 am to noon at Zion Lutheran Church in Marinette to benefit Jay Nelson, a student at UW-Marinette. Nelson was struck by a car and suffered 3 compound fractures of his left tibia and a compound fracture of his left fibula.
Nelson has been attending UW-Marinette for 2 years seeking a degree in Technical Education Training. He is a graduate of NWTC and also a junior at UW-Stout online. He is an active member of the Crew Club as well as many other community organizations and a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He and his wife have three children.
The campus Crew Club is seeking donations of money and items for the rummage and bake sale. Proceeds will be used to help Nelson and his family through the holiday season.

UW-Marinette Community Forum on Math Anxiety December 3

Have you ever heard someone say "I have never been able to do math. My brain just goes completely blank when I have a math problem in front of me."
Or are you the person who has avoided classes and careers that have a heavy math component? Is balancing a checkbook a chore?
Monday evening's community forum may be just for you. UW-Marinette math professor Mike Bartlett has first-hand experience with a problem that confronts many students and non-students alike: math anxiety.
Bartlett is Australian by birth and has taught mathematics, physics and information technology courses in his home country as well as in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Before joining the faculty at UW-Marinette in the fall of 2002, he taught at Walla Walla College in Washington state.
"The community forum on December 3 will outline some of my earliest experiences with Math Anxiety until the present. These experiences span 30 years of teaching Mathematics in four different countries. These experiences have helped me frame an approach to Math Anxiety that focuses on the root of the problem rather than focusing on the symptoms," said Bartlett.
The forum will begin at 7:30 pm in M-117 of the Main Building at UW-Marinette. Sponsored by the UW-Marinette Foundation, it is free and open to the public.

Student Winners in 2007 Art Exhibit

Juried by artist Candace Zebell, Menominee, and Ginnie Cappaert, owner of the Art and Garden Gallery in Stephenson, Michigan, the Fall 2007 Student Art Exhibit at UW-Marinette features drawings and photos from professor James LaMalfa’s Art 101-102 Drawing and Art 161-261 Photography classes.
First place in drawing was awarded to Son Bo-Young (South Korea), for her pencil drawing “Skull,” second place to Terry Eager (Florence) for “Broken Trojan,” and third place to Sean Gardon (Peshtigo) for “Smile.” Eager was also awarded an honorable mention for his pastel drawing entitled “Curves.”
Bob Bray (Porterfield), was awarded first place in photography for his silver gel print, “Lillian,” Nick Jenquin (Marinette) second place for “Monolith,” and third place to Laura Egilsson (Menominee) for “Face Me.” An honorable mention was awarded to Robert Nichols (Wallace, MI) for his silver gel print, “Saturday Train Ride.”
The jurors agreed that the exhibit displays a wide variety of images, with a high level of sophistication among the photographs and an interesting use of subject matter in the drawings. “It was a pleasure to be asked to jury this show,” said Cappeart. “We spent a lot of time viewing each image. It was difficult to narrow it down to four placings.”
“The 32 drawings and 40 photos are impressive”, said LaMalfa. “I have the largest advanced photography section yet, with six students, and we have moved into very advanced photo techniques with ease.”
The works of other students in the show include those of Kelsey Adams, Bethany Bantes, Ashley Beaudoin, Kira Brown, Gloria Breuer, Rachel Carlson, Michael Delisse, Philip Goes, Kathryn Hoff, David Kienitz, Patty McGuire, and Daniel Post of Marinette; Rebecca Johnsen of Coleman; George Gocht of Crivitz; Kayla Bauer of Peshtigo; Heather Knope of Pound; Sonia Alonzo, Jamie Chaney, Katie Olson, and Jacob Miller of Menominee; Krista Greenwood of Wallace; Frank Oczus Jr. and Joshua St. Juliana of Stephenson, MI; and Marina Horchin of Moldova.
The exhibit will be displayed through final exam week Thursday, December 20.

Great Books Dinner/Discussion Set for December 5

Journey to New York City with Truman Capote’s novella “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” a UW-Marinette Continuing Education sponsored Great Books Dinner and Discussion. Katherine Holman, professor emeritus from UW-Marinette, will facilitate the discussion on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at The Landing restaurant in Menominee, Michigan, beginning at 5:30 P.M.
“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a seductive, wistful masterpiece. In the novella, Truman Capote created a woman whose name entered the American idiom and whose style is a part of the literary landscape. Holly Golightly knows that nothing bad can ever happen to you at Tiffany’s. Her poignancy, wit, and naiveté still continue to charm us and we celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first printing. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a lighter read – something the reader can maneuver despite all of life’s other demands for Holly makes a holiday of life. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a beautifully written, excellently executed novella. Critics have said that they would not have changed two words in the book and credited it with becoming a small classic. References will be made to the movie of the same name.

Holiday Jewelry Class Scheduled at UW-Marinete November 26

Holiday sparkle is the theme of the upcoming jewelry design class at UW-Marinette.
Shirley Pisani, a resident of Porterfield who has been designing jewelry for 15 years, will offer the class Monday, November 26 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm through UW-Marinette Continuing Education.
In this class students will create a bracelet and earring set perfect for gift giving or to jazz up one’s holiday wardrobe. Students will choose from Swarovski crystals and a sterling silver clasp and closure.
The class will meet in T-149 of the Fine Arts Building. The cost of the class is $49.

Holiday Dinner Trip Planned December 6

Ebenezer Scrooge is back! Tickets are available for the ever-popular holiday classic "A Christmas Carol" through UW-Marinette Continuing Education.
A special holiday dinner/play trip has been planned for the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton for the December 6 performance by the Nebraska Theatre Caravan, a nationally acclaimed touring troupe.
A motorcoach bus will leave from Angelis in Marinette at 3:30 pm, stopping for dinner at the Good Company restaurant in Appleton before the play. The bus will return at approximately 11:45 pm. The cost of $99 includes transportation, dinner and the play with a special guest lecture by Herbert L. Williams, former Theatre on the Bay director and associate professor emeritus of communication and theatre arts at UW-Marinette.

Cast Chosen for Seussical the Musical Jr.

The world of Dr. Seuss comes to the Children’s Theatre Stage at UW-Marinette December 7-9 and 13–16 (Dec. 7 is already sold out). Directed by Jamie Schwaba, with musical direction by Jay Jensen, and produced by Jane Jones, Continuing Education Director, a cast of 38 will bring to life the creations of the famous children’s author.
The stage version of “Seussical the Musical Jr.” was created by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, the team that scored with “Ragtime the Musical” and “Once on this Island.”
Taken from the many literary works of Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to most as Dr. Seuss, "Seussical" tells the tale of Horton the Elephant (Ryan Dusso), the hearer of Whos who live on a tiny speck of dust.
The problem is that Horton, with his humongous elephant ears, is the only jungle animal that can hear the poor Whos. Sour Kangaroo (Brittany Walker), Young Kangaroo (Andi Jackson), the Wickersham Brothers (Christian Sutton Jensen, Adam Landenberger, Adam Schacht and Noah Steffen), a chorus of birds (LeAnne Barstow, Natasha Hnatuk, Kellie Strahl, & Brittany Kloida) and the other jungle animals (Sarah Heider, Sarah Kallgren, Hannah Klumb, Makennah Lowis, Hannah McMahon, Polina Orlova, Megan Philipps, Elizabeth Poisson, Morgan Russell, Katherine Smith, McKenzee Tibbits) torment him for his singular ability and threaten to destroy the speck of dust.
Fortunately, the magic of the Cat in the Hat (Jamie Kaster), who is also the narrator of the story, makes the Whos visible to us. JoJo (Henry Benson) is the Who whose imaginative ‘thinks’ have gotten him into trouble at school again and consequently made his parents (Katelyn Swason and Daniel Tellez) very unhappy.
Other whoville citizens are played by Sami Balzola, Alyssa Carviou, Rowyn Hagen, Lilly Kallestad, Nick Lafluer, Alyssa Landenberger, Paige Mackey, Hallie Olsen, and Paige Pichette.
As Horton is trying to save the Whos, he meets up with Mayzie (Vanessa Vincent) a beautiful and vain bird who takes advantage of his niceness and gets him to sit up in a tree on her egg. Luckily, the often forgotten “bird next door” Gertude McFuzz’s (Alicia Hnatuk) loyality and devotion help Horton prevail.
“The whole family will enjoy the classic and wacky tales of Dr. Seuss as they are brought to life through song and dance by a talented and energetic cast of local performers.” says director Schwaba.
Curtain time is 7 pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 pm Sunday. Tickets for the production are $5 and $10, and can be reserved by calling 735-4313 Monday – Friday and one hour before curtain time. ###
West Shore Chorale to perform Vivaldi Gloria December 2 and 8

Antonio Vivaldi's most famous choral work, the "Gloria in D" will be performed by the West Shore Chorale and the Bay Shore Orchestra under the direction of David Giebler December 2 at Holy Spirit Church, 1016 10th Avenue in Menominee and December 8 at First Presbyterian Church, 133 Jackson, in Oconto. Both concerts will take place at 7:30 pm.
The West Shore Chorale will also be joined by 19 members of the St. Thomas Aquinas Academy Catholic Central Campus chorus, directed by Cyndee Gieber. Organ accompaniment will be provided by James Martell.
Vivaldi, along with Bach, Handel and Monteverdi, is one of the great Baroque period composers. Vivaldi's musical output during his life, from 1678 to 1741 was prolific and included sonatas, operas, concerti and sacred works noted for their verve and vitality.
The "Gloria" and "The Four Seasons" are among his most popular works today. Although he was considerably successful as a composer during his lifetime, he had to sell many of his manuscripts to make ends meet. Many of his pieces became neglected or lost. The "Gloria" was discovered in 1926 yet not performed until 1939 with embellishments by composer Alfredo Casella.
The present version, without Casella's input, was not performed until 1957 at the First Festival of Baroque Choral Music at Brooklyn College, NY.
Soloists for the Gloria include sopranos Lisa Giebler and Colleen Johnston, and altos Anne Garcia and Megan Cahill.
Other works on the program are "Lux Aurumque" by Eric Whitacre, "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen, "Candlelight Carol" by John Rutter, "Hodie Christus" by an anonymous Swiss composer, arranged by David Giebler, and "Winter Carol" with words by George Wither and music by Cyndee Giebler.
There is no admission charge but, free will donations are appreciated.

Theatre on the Bay Play has A New Packer Cheer

Although Preacher Rose, the new play being staged at Theatre on the Bay, is about a traveling female evangelist and her boy singer, it has a decided football flavor. Theatre on the Bay Playwright-in-Residence, Dr. Doug Larche and his brother Stephe, the co-composer, were both old head high school football coaches, and their father, the late Dr. Harry Larche, was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1949, eventually signed with the Baltimore Colts, and was a successful college and major university head coach.
Larche chose to set his play in three rural towns in Southern Iowa, and one character creates a “gospel football cheer” for each corresponding area university. But one overenthusiastic young woman has relatives up North and writes her own versions for the Wisconsin Badgers and the Packers. Here’s the Packer cheer:

Meet the Bucs at UW-Marinette November 19

The public is invited to “Meet the Bucs” night at UW-Marinette November 19 beginning with a tailgate at the Field House at 4 pm sponsored by Student Services and the Athletic Department.
“Plans include honoring the incredibly successful volleyball team, our rapidly blossoming soccer program, as well as introducing the campus and community to the 2007-08 version of UW-Marinette basketball,” says faculty athletic representative and assistant professor of geography/geology Keith West.
“Bucs basketball would have a tough time topping the heroics of last year, but both coaches are very excited about the squads they’ve assembled. By happy coincidence, the first home game for the men and women occurs on Monday, 19 November versus UW-Manitowoc. The Athletic Department and Student Services are collaborating on a big night to tip-off the season. There will be food, festivities and, of course, exciting Bucs basketball!” says West.
The UW-Manitowoc Blue Devils will play the women’s and men’s basketball teams at 5 pm and 7 pm respectively. Scott Haulotte is the coach for the women’s team and George Hayes coaches the men. Admission to the games is free to UW-Marinette students, $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students (K-12), $1 for children or $5 for a family with three or more children and a two adults.

Reverse Painting on Glass December 1

UW-Marinette Continuing Education will offer a workshop in Reverse Painting on Glass Saturday, December 1. The one-day class will meet from 9:00 am – 3:30 pm in T-149 in the Fine Arts Bldg. The instructor is Olga Orlovska-Soaltys, an accomplished artist from Ukraine.
Reverse Painting on Glass is an introductory course where students learn the basic techniques needed to create a singular work of art.
Orlovska-Soaltys, who is a graduate of The National Lviv Academy of Art, describes Reverse Painting on Glass as a technique where paint is applied on the back or reverse side of the glass and is viewed through the front surface of the glass. The paint must be applied in layers on a sheet of glass. What is seen first or appears closest to the viewer as detail or highlight must be painted first. Then the larger details must be added. Finally, the background is painted, completely covering the surface. The cost of the class is $39 plus materials which can be purchased before the class or from the instructor. Participants should bring a bag lunch.

UW-Marinette Resource Guide Available on Request

The University of Wisconsin - Marinette 2007-08 Resource Guide is now available upon request. The guide is an informational resource for schools and community organizations about the university and its facilities that are available to the public.
For convenience, the Speakers Bureau section is arranged according to university disciplines with the speakers and titles of proposed lectures for each field from Anthropology to Zoology. Many of the faculty and staff members are also willing to tailor their presentations to the specific needs and interests of the group requesting a speaker. In addition, the guide notes that faculty and staff are available for consulting and surveys for environmental audits. Student interns are also available by contacting faculty in the various areas listed in the guide.

Financial Aid Nights Scheduled

With costs increasing for a college education, financial aid is increasingly important for students. Eleven sessions on Financial Aid Information have been scheduled at area high schools and UW-Marinette by Cindy Bailey, Assistant Campus Dean for Student Services.
Financial aid is available to registered students with demonstrated need. Full-time students carrying at least 12 credits are eligible for maximum aid. Students must enroll for at least six credits to be eligible for limited aid.
Financial aid comes as a package which can include grants, loans, and work-study options. "There are some misunderstandings about how to apply for financial aid," says Bailey. As a rule of thumb, no one should ever pay for any type of financial aid application or scholarship research. There is no charge for applying for student financial aid."
Bailey will present information about the financial aid process which is used for any post-secondary education institution on the following dates, times and places:

Women's Conference Focuses on Style November 19

The key word is STYLE at this year's Women’s Conference sponsored by the Stephenson National Bank and Trust and UW-Marinette Continuing Education.
The conference will be held Monday, November 19 in the Main Building at UW-Marinette beginning with registration at 4 pm. The conference registration fee is $25 which includes dinner and the program.
"Living With Style," as the conference is titled, "is all about making connections with one's own unique style," says UW-Marinette Continuing Education director Jane Jones.
"Style is so important in our lives," says Jones. "Style is not limited to clothing and hair, although that is a big part of it. Style is reflected in all parts of our lives, from the public places where we work and shop to the private spaces of our homes."
Before the 5 pm dinner by Costa Caffe, participants will be treated to music by the well-known string trio “Three Belles with Bows” which features the talents of violinist Barb Akins, violist Pat Troutt, and cellist Mary Ellen Krawczyk, A complimentary wine-tasting will also be provided by Tony's Haller Beverage.
“Last year’s conference on creativity featured women artists from around the community,” says co-organizer Laura Chaltry, marketing officer for The Stephenson National Bank and Trust. “We are very happy to be able to offer a venue for them again this year.”
Artworks for sale will include watercolors and collages in mixed media by Ginnie Cappaert, oil paintings by Jennifer Larrabee, jewelry and etched glass by Kathy Giese, handmade notecards by Barbara Lundgren, flowers from Doris Nielson of Everard’s Flowers, quilts by Sue Polito, crystal jewelry By Diane Erickson, wire-wrapped artistry by Pam Sahlbom, jewelry by Laura Hornick, and purses By Mari MacIntyre.
“Dinner, served at 5:00 pm will include a selection of delicious soups and sandwiches provided by Costa Caffe,” says Jones. During dinner, guests will enjoy a style show by Simply Charming.
Sessions following dinner will feature Brenda Blystone on "Women's Leadership Styles," Connie Parkovich on "Healthy Lifestyle" and Dawn Spangenberg on "Feng Shui: Styles that Maximize your Environment."
Blystone teaches Spanish at Marinette High School and Continuing Education classes at UW-Marinette.
Parkovich is the Executive Director of the Bond Community Center and the Citizen’s Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the Bond Health Center, Oconto’s own hospital. She was previously the Executive Director of the UW-Marinette Foundation, Senior Program Director at the YMCA, and an elementary physical education instructor for the Marinette School District.
Since 1996 Spangenberg has been a Feng Shui practitioner incorporating its principles in her residential and commercial design work. She currently teaches Feng Shui design at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton and conducts workshops in northeast Wisconsin as well as nationally. She’s also a teacher in the "Course in Light" and a Reiki practitioner.
“Putting style and "savoir faire" in one's life can be fun and exciting. This year’s conference will be filled with ideas about how to do that," says Jones.
