Community Forum Scheduled for National Train Day
May 5, 2009
On May 10, 1869, in Promontory Summit, Utah, the "golden spike" was driven into the final tie that joined 1,776 miles of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railways, ceremonially creating the nation′s first transcontinental railroad. And America was transformed.
Suddenly, the country was united in a way it never had been, and train travel sparked imaginations in small towns and big cities, among folk who desired adventure and businessmen who saw fortunes to be made. The sound of a train whistle was the soundtrack of happy reunions and tearful farewells. It heralded the arrival of mail, supplies and change.
The train became more than the go-to mode of transport for people and goods. It was a proud achievement of engineering vision, technical ingenuity and sweat. It was a cultural force that sparked the creative imaginations of storytellers in songs, movies and novels. Railways provided jobs for thousands of Americans. The train station became a focal point of every community, from New York City′s Pennsylvania Station to the tiny stations that dotted rural America.
National Train Day, officially celebrated on May 9 this year, will be recognized with a community forum by Dr. Wendel Johnson on May 8 at 12:00 pm noon in M-117 of the Main Building on the UW-Marinette campus. A powerpoint presentation entitled "Travel by Rail: What getting out of the car can offer you" will be made on the Amtrak System. The environmental, energy conservation and safety advantages will be stressed as the Midwest Rail Initiative moves forward. The forum is free and open to the public.

Theatre on the Bay Fundraising Begins
May 1, 2009
The arts clarify our vision, challenge our views, connect us with others, and lift our spirits. UW-Marinette's Theatre on the Bay and Children's Theatre begin the 43rd season with a call for funding from patrons and advertisers who make the season possible.
"Since 1967, Theatre on the Bay has been a mainstay in our communities, providing top-notch entertainment and enrichment for residents, education for our children, and a draw for tourists and business transplants, which helps grow our economy," says UW-Marinette Dean Paula Langteau.
This year, Theatre on the Bay supporters will see their ads and names in the program not just for the summer, but for the entire season from July to March.
The blockbuster musical, Footloose, will open the season July 9 – 12 & 16 – 19 with the heartfelt story of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him, set to the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score. Directed by TOB veteran actress and director Amanda Rhines, it promises to rival last summer’s Grease which played to sellout crowds. The stage adaptation of the movie is by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie with music by Tom Snow and lyrics by Dean Pitchford.
The Continuing Education Children’s Theatre program will produce Willy Wonka Jr. October 9 – 11. Roald Dahl's timeless story of the world famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life in this stage adaptation of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, which features the songs from the classic family film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It is adapted for the stage by Leslie Bricusse and Tim McDonald with music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and directed by Jamie Schwaba
Artistic Director Simon Jon Provan will direct Theatre on the Bay productions of The Glass Menagerie in November and Lobby Hero in March. Tennessee Williams poignant and lyrical Glass Menagerie is one of his earlier works and remains one of his finest and most sensitive creations. It will be staged November 6 - 8 and 13 – 15. Lobby Hero, by Kenneth Lonergan has been called “A Masterpiece. The best drama, the best comedy and the best romance of the year, all rolled into one," by Time Out. Lonergan’s comic wizardry can be seen March 5 - 7 and 12 - 14.
Theatre on the Bay and UW-Marinette’s Continuing Education Children's Theatre depend on the support of the community through ticket sales and donations. The campus, Marinette County and the State of Wisconsin provide a stage, basic equipment, maintenance, publicity services and business management, but no other support for productions. Production budgets include costs for royalties, scripts, orchestra, director and staff, set design and construction, lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, promotional materials as well as maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment.
In exchange for donations, businesses and individuals may advertise or have their name listed in the 43rd Season program booklet, which will be seen by all theatre patrons during the year. In addition to donations, special "Above-the-Title sponsorships are available which include one's business listed in the program booklet and in all promotional materials and press releases for the play one chooses to sponsor. Contributions to the TOB endowment are also being accepted.
To make a donation, arrange an advertisement, become a sponsor, or make an endowment contribution, contact Maureen Frawley at UW-Marinette, 715-735-4310 or email maureen.frawley@uwc.edu. The deadline for inclusion in the TOB season program booklet is June 1.
