UW-Marinette Confers 66 Associate Degrees

Associate of Arts and Science degrees were conferred on 66 graduates at UW-Marinette’s annual commencement ceremony, Saturday, May 20 in the Herbert L. Williams Theatre. In addition, 18 international students received certificates of completion for academic and English as a Second Language programs.

The commencement address was given by Marvin Van Kekerix, Provost and Vice Chancellor of UW Extension. Van Kekerix provides leadership for academic and program planning, and administrative support areas including Human Resources and Information Systems. For the past several months, he has served as interim Chancellor of the UW Colleges and UW Extension.

Assistant Campus Dean for Student Services Cindy Bailey who was this year’s Kaplan Fellow gave the Kaplan Fellow message. Daniel Mosincat of Peshtigo presented the class message, and Su-Yeon Kim of South Korea, the message from the International Students. Mosincat, who received the Chamber of Commerce Academic Excellence Award, will enter the honors program in psychology at UW Madison in the fall. Kim, a student with the Youth for Understanding Program, was president of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society this year. She was also presented with the Lee Grugel Memorial Leadership Award by Van Kekerix. This award is presented to only one student among the nearly 12,000 students in the UW Colleges. She is the fourth recipient from UW-Marinette to receive the award since it was instituted in 1997. Kim will transfer to the University of Texas at Austin in the fall to pursue a degree in filmmaking.

Digital Cinematography offered at UW-Marinette

Learn how to make digital movies at UW-Marinette in June. Continuing Education is offering a four-session course on Saturdays from June 3 - 24 taught by Larry LaMalfa, photographer and webmaster for the Neville

Museum in Green Bay and the Green Bay Independent Film-makers Guild. LaMalfa attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison and has a degree in film making from the School of Journalism.

The class will be held in the arts computer lab (T-149) of the fine arts building on campus and students will work on Macintosh G4 computers. The class will use the art departments’ digital video camera. Students will shoot and edit with Mac’s I-Movie program. The end result will be a group shot and edited movie, which will be burned to DVD. Art professor and Larry’s father, James LaMalfa, will assist.

The class will meet from 11 am to 1 pm. The cost of the course is $49. This class is limited to an enrollment of seven students so interested persons should register as soon as possible.

Theatre on the Bay Summer Reservations
May 23, 2006

Reservations for Theatre on the Bay’s 40th summer season may be made at the TOB box office beginning Tuesday, May 30. The box office hours are 4 - 6 pm weekdays and one hour before curtain time on show days.

The summer plays are:
Cinderella by Rodgers and Hammerstein, directed by Amanda Rhines and produced by the Continuing Education Children's Theatre to run from June 8 - 11 with show at 7 pm on  Thursday and Friday and at 2 pm and 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $8 and $10.

The Fantasticks by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, directed by Dr. Doug Larche scheduled for June 23 – 26 and June 30 – July 3 (excluding July 2). Curtain time is at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10 and $12.

July 2 has been announced as a special 40th anniversary celebration with Herbert L. Williams and Dr. Doug Larche. The gala will begin at 7:30 pm. There is no charge for admission, but reservations are required and donations will be accepted.

Nunsense by Dan Goggin, directed by Herbert L. Williams for July 21 – 24 and July 28 – 31 with shows at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10 and $12.

Summer Session Classes Open at UW-Marinette

College students who are home for the summer may want to consider picking up extra credits at UW-Marinette. Courses are still open, financial aid is available, and credits transfer easily to colleges and universities across the nation.

“Summer classes are a bargain,” says Cindy Bailey, assistant campus dean for Student Services. “They allow students to graduate sooner, saving them both time and money.”

For high school students, taking summer classes at UW-Marinette can give them a jump start on their course work by fulfilling a degree requirement or reducing their class load in the fall. For those who are not regular students, summer classes are a way to find out if college is for them, or an opportunity to develop personal and professional skills for their own enrichment.

“Classes at UW-Marinette are both convenient and economical,” says Bailey. Courses are scheduled for mornings, afternoons or evenings in three or four-day blocks.

The three-week session beginning May 22 offers Public Speaking and Psychology of Gender. The six-week session beginning May 22 offers Theatre lab, English Composition and Algebra. A six-week session beginning June 12 offers English Literature. Chemistry will also begin June 12 for an eight-week session. A three-week session starting July 5 will offer Jazz History and Appreciation as well as Elementary Statistics.

UW-Marinette art faculty featured on WLUK Friday

James LaMalfa, associate professor of art at UW-Marinette, will be featured  on the Good Day Wisconsin show on WLUK (Channel 11) at 8:25 am Friday, May 19. LaMalfa will be interviewed about his lecture “The Da Vinci Code: Fact, Fiction or Fraud" which is scheduled for May 17 at UW-Marinette, May 23 at the Spies Library in Menominee, and May 24 at the Neville Museum in Green Bay. All lectures will be given at 7 pm at no charge to the public.

LaMalfa's slide lecture is based on his research on Da Vinci, along with his observations of the 15th century artist's work in the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. If there is sufficient interest after the lecture, LaMalfa will read passages from his own work-in-progress, a novel on Da Vinci titled “The Da Vinci Diaries”.

Vice Chancellor Van Kekerix to Give Commencement Address at UW-Marinette

Commencement Exercises at UW-Marinette will be held at the campus on Saturday, May 20 at 3:00 pm. The public is invited to attend the ceremony in the Herbert L. Williams Theatre. 93 graduates will receive associate degrees marking successful completion of the freshman/sophomore liberal arts curriculum at UW-Marinette. The Associate of Arts and Science degree satisfies requirements at all UW institutions. In addition, 20 Youth for Understanding (YFU) and International Research and Exchange  (IREX) students will receive certificates: 8 for completion of their one-year academic program; 8 for completion of the one-year English as a Second Language (ESL) program; 2 for completion of the one-semester ESL program; and 2 for completion of the one-semester academic program and the one-semester ESL program.
    
UW Extension Provost and Vice Chancellor Marv Van Kekerix will give the commencement address. Van Kekerix provides leadership for academic and program planning, and administrative support areas including Human Resources and Information Systems. For the past several months, he has served as interim Chancellor of the UW Colleges and UW Extension.
Van Kekerix was first appointed as Provost and Vice Chancellor of UW-Extension in October 2000, having served as the interim provost since July 2000. He also served as Interim Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Extension from September 2004 through April 2006. Before joining the UW-Extension staff, Van Kekerix served as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Extension at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for seven years. In that position, he was responsible for Credit Outreach, Outreach Education, and University Telecommunications and Distance Learning Resources. Before moving to Wisconsin, Van Kekerix was Director of the Department of Academic Telecommunications and Professional Development in the Division of Continuing Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
    
The Faculty/Staff message will be delivered by Cindy Bailey, assistant campus dean for Student Services. Daniel Mosincat of Peshtigo, a candidate for the associate of arts and science degree, has been chosen by his classmates to give the class message. Su-Yeon Kim of South Korea will present the International Student message.
    
Degrees will be conferred by Dean Paula Langteau and Cindy Bailey. Jane Jones, Director of Continuing Education and International Programs, will present certificates to the international students.
    
A reception in the student union will follow the ceremony.

Student Organizations Honored at UW-Marinette Awards Banquet

UW-Marinette's annual spring awards banquet held at Schussler's Supper Club in Peshtigo May 5, recognized the achievements and members of several student organizations for the 2005-2006 academic year including the Student Senate, the Campus Activities Board, the Student Ambassadors, the Anthropology & Sociology Club, the International Club, and the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society.
    
Student Senate officers included president Russell From, Crivitz; vice president/secretary Diana Castillo, Menominee; and treasurer Nijat Namazov, Azerbaijan. Other members of the Student Senate included Nathan Folgert, Joshua LaLonde, and Brad Rabbie, Marinette; Daniel Mosincat, Peshtigo; Matthew Koldos, Stephenson; Zack Allen, Little Suamico; Aslan Amani, Azerbaijan; Su-Yeon Kim, South Korea; and Jennifer Wilke, Menominee.
    
Student Ambassadors were recognized for their contributions to the campus as organizers of two annual blood drives, bell-ringers for Salvation Army, and as hosts for campus preview days and other special campus events. Their members included From, Kim and Mosincat; Jenna Cornell and Jamie Overman of Marinette; Justin LaCrosse of Menominee; Ruth Babcock and Isaac Linstad of Peshtigo; Morgan  Foley of Ocono Falls; and Tony LaMalfa and Richard Swiatnicki of Porterfield.    
The Campus Activities Board (CAB) is in charge of all social planning for the campus. CAB officers were president Emily Woods of Suring; vice-president Castillo; and treasurer LaCrosse. Members included Rabbie; Sara Kellner of Wallace; Robyn Grenier, Peshtigo; and Nicole Reiter of Menominee. The advisor for Student Senate, Student Ambassadors and the Campus Activities Board is Student Services Coordinator Mary Beth Frechette.
    
Anthropology and Sociology Club officers were president Mosincat; vice president Jordan Cross, Menominee;  and secretaries Wilke and Megan Linsmeier of Daggett. Dr. Dail Murray, associate professor of anthropology/sociology, is the advisor.
    
International Club officers included president Kim; vice-president Miranda Erickson, Menominee; secretary Kim Hurkmans, Marinette; and treasurer Mosincat. Silk Painting Class at UW-Marinette

A class in Silk Painting will be offered by UW-Marinette Continuing Education Saturday, June 24 from 9 am to 3:30 pm in T-149 of the Fine Arts Building. The instructor is Olga Orlovska-Soaltys who earned an art degree from the National Art Academy in Lviv, Ukraine. She has been painting on silk for more than 12 years.
 
Silk Painting is an introductory course where students learn the basic techniques needed to create a singular work of art. Students should bring a brown bag lunch, a jar for water, pencil, a hairdryer, a plastic pallet, an ice cube tray and paint brushes.  All other supplies are included in the cost of the class which is $49.00.

2006-2007 UW-Marinette Scholarship Recipients

The 2006-2007 scholarship recipients were announced at the annual spring awards banquet for UW-Marinette held at Schussler’s Supper Club Friday, May 5.
    
A Full-Time Continuing Talentship was awarded to Rachel Rivard, Stephenson. Sabra Sipple of Menominee received the Marinette Women’s Club Scholarship. Jay Nelson and Christina LaJoie, both of Marinette, received the Hugh and Mary Higley Student Scholarship, awarded through the M&M Area Community Foundation, and the WPS Resources Foundation, Inc. scholarship. Amber Palenica, Lena, received the C.W. Richards Memorial Scholarship. The Williams Reines Environmental Scholarship was awarded to Angela Larsen, Marinette.  Palenica and Larsen also received the Phi Theta Kappa Nathan & Jennifer Pollard Memorial Scholarship.
    
Louis W. Staudenmaier Scholarships were given to Heather Ewaldt and Ruth Babcock, both of Marinette. Carolyn Highlen, Porterfield, received the Allen Bedrosian Memorial Scholarship and the Joseph J. Gerend “Ping Pong Joe” Memorial Scholarship. Hope Hensel of Crivitz received the Herta F. Gerend Memorial Scholarship.
    
The Paul & Don Neverman Scholarship was given to Carrie Carlson, Marinette. Jorilou Shampo, Stephenson, received Molander Family Scholarship. Richard Swiatnicki, Porterfield, received the Mary and Hugh Higley UW-Green Bay Transfer Scholarship and Holly Anderson, Stephenson, was awarded the UWGB Transfer Scholarship.  Lindsay Eggener, Marinette, received the UW-Oshkosh Chancellor’s Scholarship.
    
Other scholarships will be announced later this month including the New Freshman Talentship, the Phi Theta Kappa Academic Excellence Scholarship, the Ira Darwin Johnson Scholarship, the Shirley Evans Memorial Scholarship, the Anchor Coupling Scholarship, the Barb Neverman Memorial Scholarship, the Dale N. Olson Scholarship, and the Menominee Lioness Scholarship. Scholarships to be awarded on August 1 are the 21+ Talentship, the Morris G. and Grace R. Mundt Scholarship, and the AAUW Scholarship.
    
These scholarships are made possible by the generosity of donations made to the UW-Marinette Foundation, which provides funding for deserving students as well as programming, faculty development and campus enhancements. Students, Faculty and Staff Honored at UW-Marinette Spring Awards Ceremony

Top students, faculty and staff were recognized Friday, May 5 at UW-Marinette’s annual spring awards “Cinco de Mayo” banquet held at Schussler’s Supper Club in Peshtigo. The event was sponsored by the Student Senate to honor outstanding achievements in leadership, academic excellence and other special efforts during the 2005-2006 school year. Serving as master of ceremonies for the evening was Diana Castillo, Student Senate Vice President.
    
Paula Langteau, Campus Dean and CEO and member of the Marinette Area Chamber of Commerce, presented the Chamber of Commerce awards for Academic Excellence to Daniel Mosincat of Peshtigo. Mosincat has been accepted into the honors program at UW-Madison where he plans to major in psychology. Robert Bray of Lake, Wisconsin, received the Chamber Student Leadership award. Bray returned to school after a career in the Coast Guard as a ship’s engineer. Langteau cited Bray’s contributions to the campus as a member of the Student Senate and Student Ambassadors.    

Dr. Jennifer Flatt, associate professor of English, was honored with the "Teacher of the Year" award for the 2nd time in her career since joining the staff at UW-Marinette in 2000. She has taught classes in English and Spanish and now heads the “Engaging Students in the First Year” initiative on campus. She has also served as the campus steering chair and the advisor for the student International Club.
    
The “Instructional Academic Staff of the Year” award was presented to Sangeeta Nelson, lecturer in mathematics since fall, 2005. The “Academic Staff of the Year” award was given to Mary Beth Frechette, Student Services Coordinator. The “Support Staff of the Year” award was given to Beth Mikle, financial specialist. She also received the award in 2003-04. These special awards are voted on by the students and honor the faculty and staff “from whom they have learned the most, both in and out of the classroom.”

College for Kids Math Camp June 26 - 29

UW-Marinette Continuing Education will offer a College for Kids summer Algebra Math Camp for ages 12 to 15 the week of June 26 to 29. The class will meet from 9 am to 11:30 am in T-153 of the Fine Arts Building. Keri Kunesh, a special education instructor from the Peshtigo School District is the instructor. The cost of the course is $69.

Cast Chosen for Cinderella at UW-Marinette

Children's Theatre director Amanda Rhines has announced the cast for the upcoming production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical Cinderella scheduled for June 8 - 11 at 7 pm Thursday and Friday, and 2 pm and 7 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kristie Jo Ross as the scullery maid turned princess heads the cast of 45 with Chris Goltz as prince charming. Kristin Heesemann is the Fairy Godmother, Tristan Schuh, the king, and Alicia Hnatuk, the queen. Holly Koesling will take the role of the stepmother with Molly McFarlane and Sara Bertagnoli as the two stepsisters.

Bards on the Bay Festival May 4 at UW-Marinette

The fourth annual Bards on the Bay Northwoods Playwrights Festival will be held at UW-Marinette Thursday, May 4 at 7:30 pm in the Herbert L. Williams Theatre. Led by Theatre on the Bay Artistic Director and Playwright-in-Residence, Dr. Doug Larche, the spring playwriting workshop has produced six new short plays. They will be performed by UW-Marinette students and members of the area communities.  

The plays include Fowl Play by Jan Ross Deetjen, Officers of the Empire by Joshua LaLonde, For the Birds  by Richard B. Peterson, Parable of the Citizen by William Shepard, Reunion by Jenna Cornell, and two plays by Dr. Doug Larche: Wrestling with God and The Pygmalion Effect.
