Espenscheid Retires From UW-Marinette
May 11, 2005
Dr. Richard Parish of Waupan was a student in Lyle Espenscheid's College Algebra and Trigonometry class in 1974. He recently wrote to tell Espenscheid how his life had been changed by that class taught so many years ago.
"Professors who distance themselves from students and present material as a river to either ford or drown in are found everywhere. Those who strive to actually help students make it to the other side, and do it for a lifetime, are rare indeed—and those who sit under them are privileged and blessed. I know this is true because you helped me to the other side."
Espenscheid, associate professor of mathematics at UW-Marinette since 1967, with a reputation for a gentle demeanor and love of jokes, will retire at the end of this semester. A reception in his honor, open to the public, will be held in the theatre lobby Thursday from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. In conjunction with the reception, a Lyle Espenscheid Scholarship Fund has been established by the UW-Marinette Foundation. Contributions may be made at the reception or by contacting Kathy Claycomb at (715) 732-2067.
After 38 years of teaching a full array of mathematics classes from statistics to calculus, with technology that included slide rulers and purple-inked mimeograph copies to computers, graphic calculators and the Internet, Espenscheid has had the opportunity to influence many students.
Espenscheid has helped students from all backgrounds and levels of preparation from those who went on to become doctoral candidates to those who suffered from extreme math anxiety.
“Math anxiety? I try to give the kids a break and bend over backwards to help them. I think it's been beneficial," said Espenscheid.
Spencer Dunn, who attended UW-Marinette in 1974, is now the math department chair at Pflugerville High School near Austin, Texas. "There was something special about those first couple of years at UW and I will cherish them always. You were a big help then and you probably had an impact on my decision to return to education," writes Dunn.
Janet Glime, who went into nursing, recalled how she reluctantly signed up for a statistics class at UW-Marinette. "I remember walking into that classroom of 19-year-olds and feeling very out of place. I began the class with a bad attitude—but that didn't last long," she wrote. She described Espenscheid as "helpful and fun to learn from."
The key words in the equation for Espenscheid and his students are "math = fun." Perhaps that is why, for a record 11th time, Espenscheid was voted the Teacher of the Year at the annual awards banquet held Friday, May 6.
"The most fun class I had was a 7 a.m. calculus class five days a week. Mike Kalm is now a Ph.D. Mike Valance is a Ph.D. electrical engineer," Espenscheid said remembering some of his students from those early years.
"I've enjoyed teaching statistics the most for long term because you can bring so many areas into the teaching, so many applications." And so many jokes. He has even been known to give the wrong final to students to get a reaction out of them.
In spite of his long tenure in the department of mathematics, Espenscheid said it was difficult to make the decision to retire.
"I am looking forward to it and yet, I still enjoy what I do. I still like my students and my colleagues. People are the best thing about working [at UW-Marinette]. Being around students keeps a person young. We have a congenial group. But I have things I want to do. I am a builder. I want to keep active."
Espenscheid, who was born in Creve Court, near Peoria, Ill. said two of his life-long interests, trains and math, started at a very young age.
"I used to beg my parents to take me to Chillicothe, Illinois to watch the passenger trains go through," he said. "And math was always easy for me. I started in aeronautical engineering but switched to math. My mother was a teacher. All of her siblings were teachers. It came naturally."
Espenscheid earned his bachelor's degree in math and English at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, and his master's degree in mathematics and education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He taught for four years at Crivitz High School before joining the faculty at UW-Marinette in 1967.
As for his talent for building things, that came later. He and his wife Judy had bought a cabin and wanted to put on an addition. "We hired a guy to do the work. I watched him doing it and everything was done badly. I remember him saying, 'My best is none too good.' I thought I could do it myself, so I did."
Espenscheid not only built things for his family, he spent many years as master carpenter for Theatre on the Bay.
"The most challenging set was for 'Company,' which had 10 staircases," he said. He also built a harpsicord for the UW-Marinette music department. His love of theatre and music included acting parts in "Fiddler on the Roof,” "The Crucible," and "The Diary of Anne Frank." He has also been a member of the West Shore Chorale, played the trombone and Hawaiian guitar, and studied music theory under David Giebler.
In addition to interests in math, trains, and music, Espenscheid enjoys reading, writing, and politics. He spent 12 years on the Marinette School Board. "If I had it to do over again, I'd be a writer. I've written a couple of children's books," said Espenscheid.
Meanwhile, the building projects are on the front burner. Espenscheid and his wife are renovating a house on the north side of Menominee.
"We took it down to the studs. Did all the plumbing, electrical, and siding. And we hope to have it on the market in the next couple weeks," said Espenscheid.
Other projects are in the works: Daughter Heidi will move from Wyoming to Georgia and son Aaron is planning to move to a different house in Beaver Dam, Wis.
When asked how his students would remember him, Espenscheid reflected, "I hope they would say I am concerned about them doing well. I think some of the good students learn in spite of me. I probably shoot for too many of the lower students to understand everything. I guess I think that everyone can get it if they try hard enough. I try to simplify it as much as possible."
In other words, it’s about the Espenscheid method of helping students ford that river of mathematics and successfully reach the other side.
