Pippin Opens at TOB June 22
June 15, 2007

Sponsored by Time Warner Cable, Theatre on the Bay will present Stephen Schwartz's musical comedy "Pippin" June 22 - 25 and June 29 to July 2 at 7:30 pm at UW-Marinette's Herbert L. Williams Theatre.

Schwartz, who is the creator of the current box office hit, "Wicked," began his career in musical theatre with "Godspell" and "Pippin" in the early '70s.

The idea for "Pippin" originated at Carnegie Tech, where Schwartz was a student in 1965 reading a history book which mentioned Charlemagne and his son Pepin, who, as is sometimes the case with fathers and sons, did not get along very well. Schwartz was intrigued with the idea and worked with librettist Roger O. Hirson, to create a musical which opened in New York in 1972 to enthusiastic audiences. It ran for four and a half years, surpassing "South Pacific" as one of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history.

"For anyone who has not yet discovered Theatre on the Bay, "Pippin" would be a delightful discovery," said TOB Artistic Director and Playwright-in-Residence, Dr. Doug Larche. "We have a lot of UW-Marinette and local area talent, but who would believe that we are also featuring actors and staff members from the New School in New York, the Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, The Young Americans, and from great universities like Oxford, Yale, Cal Arts, Penn State, South Florida, Northern Michigan, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, Minnesota State University, Grand Valley State and Augustana. We even have a recent veteran of the Iraq War and a returning dance student from Sweden. Right here in the Twin Cities. It's an amazing group!"

Set in the year 780 A.D., Pippin (a variation of the name Pepin), played by Chris Goltz, is an extraordinary young man and the son of the Holy Roman Emperor. He is talented, handsome and looking for his path in life. He tries war, love, revolution and domesticity. He is led on his journey by the Leading Player, Ricky Berlin. His father Charlemagne is played by Jason Larche.

Other characters that Pippin meets on his path and the actors that play them include his lovely single mother love interest, Tara Dizor and her son, (real-life son), Robert Dizor; his oversexed and treacherous stepmother, Amanda Rhines; his blockheaded half-brother, James Vincent III; his worldly-wise grandmother, Barb Bertagnoli; and an assortment of sorcerers, soldiers, suitors, saints and sinners played by Sara Bertagnoli, David Breese, Brittany Folcik, Emma Giebler, Kristin Heesemann, Megan Cahill, Alyssa Jenquin, Leah LaMalfa, Casandra Moreno, Katie Jo Pockat, Tristan Schuh, Dan Tellez, Matt LaFleur, and Eric Leister.

"Pippin" is directed by Dr. Doug Larche with associate director Jason Larche. Musical direction is by Jay Jensen and choreography, based on the original choreography of Bob Fosse, is by Amanda Rhines. Alicia Hnatuk is the assistant director. Philip Smith is tech director. Assistant tech directors are Ricky Berlin and Lisa Giebler. Two special drops were painted by UW Marinette alum, Joshua LaLonde, a UW-Milwaukee and Florida professional theatre painter, and Menominee artist Jan Ross Deetjen, whose recent theatrical creations were seen in her original play, "Rock On," in this spring's Bards on the Bay.

In addition to the generous above-the-title donation of Time-Warner Cable, the Northern Lights Clinic, Dr. Lawrence Hnatuk, and the Dizor family have made significant donations to the presentation of this musical.

"Pippin" is a show for mature audiences, which might be rated P-G 13 if it were a movie. Tickets for "Pippin" are $11 for general seating and can be purchased at the reception desk in the Main Building at UW-Marinette or one hour before curtain time by calling 715-735-4313.
