Williams Returns for TOB's "The Fantasticks"
June 15, 2006

"Try to remember,” one of the most enduring songs of the past 40 years, will bring back more than memories as Theatre on the Bay presents its first production of the 40th summer season, “The Fantasticks” running June 23 – 26 and 30 – July 3 (excluding July 2) at 7:30 pm at UW-Marinette’s Herbert L. Williams Theatre sponsored by ABC Printers Apparel and Promotions of Marinette.

Directed by Dr. Doug Larche, the play returns to the TOB stage after a 9-year hiatus. “A special treat for us is that Herbert Williams, who directed and acted in the 1968 TOB production, will reprise his role as Henry, the tottering old Shakespearean actor, which he portrayed in the 1997 production,” said Larche.

Vanessa Smith and Chris Goltz have the leading roles in this rueful fantasy about the difference between love by enchanted moonlight and as it is exposed to disillusioning morning-after sunlight. They will be seen as a pair of sweethearts whose romantic imaginations have been turned toward each other by the simple ruse of their parents pretending too oppose the match they hope for.

Smith is a UW-Marinette student and member of the West Shore Chorale who was last seen as Millie in TOB’s “Picnic.” Goltz is a music education major at UW-Eau Claire who recently had the role of the prince in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” produced by the UW-Marinette Children’s Theatre.

Doug Townsend will be seen as Hucklebee, the father of Luisa and Amanda Rhines will be Bellamy, the mother of Matt, who hold to the theory, revealed in a pattery-song called “Never Say No,” that the way to get children to do what is wanted of them is to forbid it.

Jason Larche, as El Gallo the Narrator, not only will hold the freshly pastoral story together with connecting comments between, but he will also play the part of a roving vagabond who is hired to stage a fake abduction of the heroine so that the hero can win glory in her eyes by rescuing her. Larche directed this season’s “Cinderella” and last appeared in TOB’s “Bards on the Bay Northwoods Playwrights Festival.”

Other members of the cast include Joshua Dake and Joshua LaLonde as the mutes, Mike Kruse and Tristan Schuh as Mortimer, and Sarah Bird, Jenna Cornell, Anne Garcia, Audra LaPierre, Shawna Theuerkauf and Becky Wagner as the chorus.
“The Fantasticks” has had a fantastic history. Tom Jones, author of the book and lyrics, and Harvey Schmidt, composer of the tunes, first developed the idea of the show when they encountered its plot in Edmond Rostand’s first play, “Les Romantiques,” as undergraduates at the University of Texas in 1956. When they descended upon New York and made their debuts as writers of professional material for night club entertainers and for several small revues, they continued to work on the idea.

In the summer of 1959, the show opened at an off-Broadway theatre and continued to play to full houses until 2002, making it the longest-running show in Broadway history. It has also been produced in all 50 states and in 66 foreign countries.

Musical direction for “The Fantasticks” is provided by Jay Jensen. Scenic design is by Dr. Doug Larche. Ricky Berlin is the assistant director. Lighting design is by Philip Smith.

Tickets  are $10 and $12 at the box office. Reservations can be made by calling 715-735-4313 on weekdays between 4 and 6 pm and one hour before curtain time on show days.

“Four for Three plus one” summer art exhibit featured at UW-Marinette gallery
June 7, 2006

The work of four photographers plus one craftswoman will be exhibited in the UW Marinette’s Fine Art Gallery during June, July and August, 2006. The  exhibit was curated by Professor James LaMalfa, with the assistance of his daughter Brenda and son Lawrence.

The title of the exhibit, “Four for Three plus one” refers to the four photographers whose work is displayed on the walls, James and Lawrence LaMalfa, Rick Gebhard, and Newton Yost, and the designer Meredith Jensen, whose stone necklaces are displayed in the glass case.

LaMalfa holds an MFA from UW-Madison and has taught art at UW-Eau Claire, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio and has been a member of the art faculty at UW-Marinette since 1969. He is a sculptor as well as photographer.

Rick Gebhard is a photo journalist and fine arts photographer employed by the EagleHerald newspaper. He has studied photography at UW-Green Bay under Jerry Dell, and taken numerous photographs of the Upper Peninsula, interning at the Press Gazette in Green Bay. He has won local and national awards for his photojournalism.

Newton Yost owns a Chicago-based design company and has recently converted to digital photography, winning a first place in Sturgeon Bay’s Nautical Museum competition last summer. He holds a master’s degree in business administration and has taught digital photography for the UW-Marinette Continuing Education.

Lawrence LaMalfa has a degree in cinematography from the UW Madison’s school of journalism and is employed by the Neville Museum, Green Bay as a media
consultant. He is webmaster for the Independent Filmmakers Guild, Green Bay, and has displayed his photographs at UW-Marinette several times. Lawrence is
currently teaching a Saturday digital movie making class for UW-Marinette Continuing Education.

“I thought it would be interesting to showcase the fine art photography of four photographers who use the medium in very different styles and technologies,” LaMalfa said.

“Medium influences the look of a photograph, so visitors viewing our exhibit will find silver metallic prints, digital color, traditional color prints and digital black and white prints. There is even a graphite pencil drawing I did from the model; no photograph was used. The result is probably one of the best photo exhibits we have ever presented,” said LaMalfa.

The jewelry of Meredith Jensen, a Milwaukee resident, was installed by Brenda LaMalfa. Jensen creates hand-made jewelry from precious metal, coral and semi precious stones. This is her first exhibit outside of the Milwaukee area. Her web site is http://www.m-jewelry.net.

“Ms. Jenson’s designs go well beyond traditional jewelry,” LaMalfa said. “They are really sculptural objects that can be worn and are very reasonably
priced, considering the amount of labor and artistry manifested,” he added.

Exhibit photos and jewelry may be purchased from the exhibitors.

A reception for the artists will be held on July 2 at Theatre on the Bay, beginning at 6:30 pm. A celebration for the 40th anniversary of Theatre on the Bay will begin at 7:30 pm. There is no admission charge, but reservations are requested by calling the box office at 715-735-4313.

UW-Marinette Student Receives UW Colleges Leadership Award
June 3, 2006

International students have been a part of UW-Marinette since the early days of the campus, but their numbers increased in 1993 when the Continuing Education office connected with the Youth for Understanding program to bring students from Asia, Europe, South America and Africa to the campus. These students have done very well academically and socially, adjusting to the culture of northeast Wisconsin, learning English and excelling in their studies. One student in particular has taken advantage of educational opportunities both in and outside of the classroom to accomplish much during her two years at UW-Marinette.

The daughter of an English teacher and an assessor in South Korea, Su-Yeon Kim arrived at UW-Marinette in 2004 ready to take regular academic classes. She quickly became involved in campus life as a student ambassador and senator. As a member of the senate, Kim represented UW-Marinette at Student Government Council and United Council meetings, as well as at conferences for Women’s Leadership and Building Unity. She also assisted with welcoming Governor Jim Doyle to the UW-Marinette campus at the end of March. Nationally, she represented UW-Marinette and the UW Colleges at the U. S. Student Association Legislative Conference in Washington D.C. where she helped lobby for lower tuition rates and other student issues.

Kim was also the first UW-Marinette student to participate in the annual UW System Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity held at UW-Stout this past May. She joined 226 other UW students from the four-year and two-year campuses around the state to share their academic accomplishments in presentations, poster sessions and performances. Kim presented her work in prof. Katherine Holman's English 279 course, “Women in Literature.”

“As part of her presentation on postpartum depression,” said Holman, “Kim compared elements of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's text to the dramatization of The Yellow Wallpaper, adapted by William Shepherd for Spine-Tingling Tales, a series of short plays performed at Theatre on the Bay in April, 2005.  Su-Yeon was a delightful student to work with because of her diligence and enthusiasm for scholarship, and I am proud of her for her initiative in seeking opportunities to share her work beyond her own campus,” said Holman.

About the Symposium, Kim said,  “It was a good experience presenting something that I learned. It was a great opportunity to experience what other students from other schools had studied and learned. I really liked it and hope other UW-Marinette students will participate next year.”

Kim also served as president of both the Phi Theta Kappa honors society and the International club at UW-Marinette. She said she was especially proud of the fact that a third Phi Theta Kappa scholarship was added this year due to the successful bake sales, Theatre on the Bay and other campus events catered by the Phi Theta Kappa students.

Given Kim’s involvement on the campus, it was not surprising that she was chosen by her peers to deliver the international student message at this year’s commencement on May 20. Kim was, however, the only one who registered surprise when she received the Lee Grugel Memorial Leadership Award during that event.

“We are extremely proud to have the 2006 Lee Grugel Memorial Leadership Award go to Su-Yeon,” said Dean Paula Langteau. “This award is the highest honor bestowed for leadership in the UW Colleges, going to a single student each year among over 12,000 students state-wide. And Su is most certainly deserving. She has exhibited leadership not only at the local level, but also state-wide and nationally. Truly, Su-Yeon is an asset to the campus and the community,” added Langteau.

Next fall, Kim will study at the University of Texas at Austin as a filmmaking major in the school of communications. She says she is looking forward to Texas, but will miss her teachers and friends in Wisconsin.  “If not for UW-Marinette, I wouldn’t have gotten to have this great opportunity, to be a part of the community and the school itself. I have been able to get more involved here than at a larger school. Because it is a small school, I got to know everybody here. I am going to miss my friends so much.”

“All of us at UW-Marinette wish her well as she continues her studies at the University of Texas in Austin,” said Holman.
