Community Forum at UW-Marinette February 4
January 29, 2008

Love of cooking and cookbooks collides with a scholarly interest in cultural studies and the (sometimes unsuspecting) issues and topics addressed in the pages of our favorite cookbook in the upcoming Community Forum at UW-Marinette.

Dr. Amy Reddinger, assistant professor of English who joined the UW-Marinette faculty in the fall of 2007, will speak on "Pineapple Glaze and Backyard Luaus: What we can Learn from Cold War Cookbooks," Monday, February 4 at 7:30 pm in M-117 of the Main Building.

In her presentation, Reddinger will be looking at images and recipes from popular cookbooks from the 1950s and discussing some of the interesting historical and cultural contexts that make these books so interesting fifty years later. She will focus particularly on the ways that Hawaiian culture and food become very popular in cookbooks of the era.

This forum is based on Reddinger's doctoral dissertation research, "but will be an accessible and fun presentation (with lots of pictures!)," says Reddinger.

Audience members are invited to bring their own favorite cookbooks to share and discuss in the Q & A.###

Students Seeking Families
January 24,2008

Four UW-Marinette Youth for Understanding (YFU) students are seeking homes for the spring semester. Two young men from Thailand and Belgium, as well as two women from Indonesia and Brazil would like to find families to live with while they study at the university.

Quisthas Noe’man, 20, from Jakarta, Indonesia, and has been studying English as a Second Language classes at the university since September. Noe’man is very artistic and likes to cook and sew. She enjoys being around young children.

Piromkam Passapong is 23 years old, and has studied English in his country of Thailand for 11 years. He is interested in sports education and physical fitness. Philippe Mottet, 21, of Luxembourg, Belgium, is a native French speaker who has studied English for 5 years in his country. His major interests include photography and film making.

Renata Lima is a marketing student who works with her family in their own business in Fortaleza, Brazil. She is 22 years old and has studied English for three years.

Hosting a student from another country is a culturally enriching experience. The YFU host family program is voluntary, but there is a nominal monetary remuneration in exchange for providing a home, meals, and transportation to and from the University. YFU students have their own insurance and spending money.
