Community Forum on Arthur Miller February 5
January 30, 2007

Dean Paula Langteau will present a community forum on "Perspectives on Arthur Miller" Monday, February 5 at 7:30 pm in M-117 of the main building at UW-Marinette.

Arthur Miller, who died on February 10, 2005, is considered one of the greatest American playwrights of all time. He received a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was a prominent figure in the theatre and cinema for over 61 years. Many of his plays including "The Crucible," "A View from the Bridge," "All My Sons." and "Death of a Salesman," are still widely performed and studied.

As a founding member of the Arthur Miller Society, Langteau has written and lectured extensively on Arthur Miller and his plays. Her most recent publication, which will be published this spring by University Press of America, is a collection of essays entitled "Miller and Middle America: Essays on Arthur Miller and the American Experience." The collection contains her essay, “Arthur Miller’s Clara: An Interrogation of Middle American Political Correctness.”

The Community Form series is sponsored by the UW-Marinette Foundation and is free and open to the public.

UW-Marinette Receives National Shipbuilding Research Program Contract
January 30, 2007

UW-Marinette has been named a partner in a $4.42 million National Shipbuilding Research Program contract to provide education in marine design and naval architecture using a 3D computer modeling and production planning program developed by ShipConstructor Software, Inc.

UW-Marinette will be one of the first providers of this training in the United States, in a contract that includes the University of South Alabama, 4 design agents and 10 shipbuilding companies (including Marinette Marine) in the U.S. and Canada.

The contract addresses an important need, since there is currently no program anywhere in the United States for training marine designers using ShipConstructor software, which is quickly becoming an industry standard, especially among tier II shipbuilders. The Marine Institute at the University of Newfoundland in Canada is the only place in North America presently offering this training.

This contract will change all of that.

The lack of any infrastructure to provide education and/or training has reached a critical point in the U.S. shipbuilding industry, according to the contract. Canada's having the only available training site has been “a major concern for the U.S. Shipyards and design agents involved in the design and construction of LCS (Littoral Combat Ships) vessels because they cannot use Canadian citizens on that project.”

“We are extremely excited to be able to meet the needs of one of our local industries, Marinette Marine, while at the same time meeting a larger, national need for the shipbuilding industry and the U.S. Navy,” said Dean Paula Langteau.

Marinette Marine President Bob Herre said, "We are pleased to be working with the university on this project. We think it is a win-win situation for all."

Speaking on behalf of the UW Colleges, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Greg Lampe noted that the resources of the UW System are available for collaborations of this kind between education and industry.

Langteau learned of the marine industry’s need for this professional training when she contacted Mike Hoard, Director of Engineering at Marinette Marine, this past summer, to assess local industry need for engineers while exploring the possibility of offering a collaborative bachelor’s degree in engineering through the UW. Through those conversations, she learned of this opportunity for the university to help in another way.

“When we talk about the important relationship between a quality university system and our economy this is a prime example of what we’re talking about. This is a great opportunity that brings together a program to provide advanced learning of needed skills, that supports an important regional business and that will provide long-term benefits to our economy and our people,” said Wisconsin State Senator Dave Hansen.

Michigan Congressman Bart Stupak said, "I am excited by the announcement of this project, which will benefit not only UW-Marinette and Marinette Marine Corporation, but the entire Marinette-Menominee community. By designating UW-Marinette as one of only two providers of training on this naval architecture software, this contract will allow the Menominee-Marinette community to retain, strengthen, revitalize and expand the local ship building industry, which is vital to the area's economy."

The contract provides $126,000 for the program at UW-Marinette. A similar amount has been designated each for the University of South Alabama, ShipConstructor Software USA, Inc., and ShipConstructor Software, Inc. (Canada). All together, education accounts for roughly 20% of the $4.42 million total contract. The educational component, however, is key to the implementation of the entire proposal.

The ShipConstructor software contains not only design components for various individual systems used in ships but also the ability to integrate them all in a complete ship design program.

The education module focuses on three major tasks: the development of a marine design curriculum, the development of standardized multimedia training for the ShipConstructor software, and the integration of the marine design curriculum with the software training. The duration of the contract is 22 months, with the development of the education module during the first year. After that time, UW-Marinette will be prepared to begin delivering the curriculum through their Continuing Education Department on a regular basis into the future.

The education module is one of 5 funded modules in the contract. The other 4 modules support the development of additional software design and integration components for ShipConstructor Software. The shipbuilding companies will provide input into the curriculum, serve as beta test sites for the components and, ultimately, participate in and benefit from the training.

The information generated by the project will eventually be available to shipbuilders across the country. “This project has a breadth of applicability that covers the entire U.S. shipbuilding industry,” according to the contract.

"This is a real first for Wisconsin and it's happening right here in Marinette. Partnership means progress through the efforts of UW-Marinette and Marinette Marine. This collaboration advances our efforts to keep the Great Lakes shipbuilding industry strong and to create higher wage jobs in our region," said Wisconsin Congressman Steve Kagen.

Wisconsin State Assemblyman John Nygren added, “I’m very excited about the collaboration between the university, Marinette Marine and the navy. This will be a blueprint for future opportunities and collaborations between business, private sector and government. In the end, the whole community wins because we’re providing workers for a very vital industry here in the Marinette area. I applaud this effort because we should not only be looking for new business and new opportunities but we should also look to reinforce our existing labor market here in Northeastern Wisconsin.”

In addition to UW-Marinette and Marinette Marine, participants in the Shipyard Design Enhancement Project include Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Co., Inc., Austal USA, Inc., Bollinger Shipbuilding, General Dynamics Electric Boat Division, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Avondale, Todd Pacific Shipyards, VT Halter Marine, Elliot Bay Design Group, Genoa Design International, Gibbs & Cox, Murray & Associates, Ltd., ShipConstructor Software, Inc., ShipConstructor Software USA, Inc., Autodesk, Knowledge Based Systems, Inc., Art Anderson & Associates, Noran Engineering, Inc. and the University of South Alabama.
