Beethoven Concert Sunday, February 27, 2005
February 27, 2005

Two piano concertos by Ludwig van Beethoven will be the subjects of a concert this Sunday, 7:30 p.m. in Herbert L. Williams Theater at the UW Marinette campus. 17-year old Menominee pianist Marie Yates will be the soloist for the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto #1 in C major op. 15. Guest conductor and pianist Peter Gibeau will perform the solo part in movements two and three of the first concerto. David Giebler will be the soloist in Concerto #5 in E-flat commonly known as the “Emperor Concerto.” Giebler will also conduct the orchestra for concerto #1.

The Bay Shore Orchestra will provide the orchestral setting for the soloists. “It has been a huge challenge working for the past few months to assemble an orchestra of about 25 players suitable to the task at hand with these concertos, but I am very pleased with the results” said Giebler. “I have had a strong feeling for both of these concertos since I was very young, and now I can finally be involved in both of them.” Good string, wind and percussion players from the surrounding communities as well as student instrumentalists from UW Green Bay have been rehearsing for the past two months to make these two scores come alive.

Marie Yates is a home-schooled student from Menominee who studied piano with John Robertson, and currently studies with David Giebler. She recently performed in the Manitowoc Lakeshore Wind Ensemble Concert Contest. Peter Gibeau is Associate Professor of Music at UW Washington Co. in West Bend, WI. In addition to performing the solo parts in concerto #1, he will conduct the orchestra for concerto #5. David Giebler is Associate Professor of Music at UW Marinette. His past concerto performances have been with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the UW Madison Symphony, The Lakeshore Wind Ensemble and the N.E.W. Band.

Admission to the concert is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students and senior citizens. Tickets will be available at the door.

Cast Announced for TOB’s Dancing at Lughnasa
February 28, 2005

Myth, character, humor, pathos and wild dance are blended in the upcoming Theatre on the Bay production of Brian Friel’s award-winning play, “Dancing at Lughnasa,” set for April 1 - 3 and 8 - 10 at the Herbert L. Williams Theatre on the UW-Marinette campus. There's also a surprise appearance of an old friend!

Artistic Director, Dr. Doug Larche said, "We are proud and excited to announce that this show will mark the return to the TOB stage of legendary founding director and popular actor, Herbert Williams, who will portray the eccentric character of Uncle Jack, an Irish Catholic priest who has served in a leper colony in Africa just a little too long; and whose mind has artfully blended the pagan and the pious." Williams last appeared in “The Fantasticks” on the TOB stage in 1997 and “The Dresser” in 1996.

"Dancing at Lughnasa" was selected as the "Best Play of the Year" in America, England and Canada, and tells the story of five headstrong sisters who live in the lonely hills two miles outside the tiny village of Ballybeg, Ireland, in 1936; Gerry, the roving Welshman who tries to steal more than one heart; and Uncle Jack; all told through the narrated memories of the "love child," Michael, when he returns home decades later. It is set at the pagan Festival of Lughnasa at harvest time, and commemorates the arrival of both Uncle Jack home from Uganda and the arrival of the first radio in the family.

The sisters include Kate (Heather LaFleur),the disciplinarian of the family who earns most of their meager income; Agnes (Anne Garcia) the quiet sister who spends her days knitting gloves to the memories of dancing; Rose (Cyndee Giebler), a sweet and mildly retarded woman who follows her heart; Maggie (Carolyn McGuire) who is the earthy, energetic woman who invariably finds sunshine among the shadows; and Christina (Susan Vairus), the unmarried mother who must, over and over, almost believe the charming lies of the usually absent Gerry (William Knaapen/Joshua LaLonde). Michael, the play’s narrator, is played by Brian Cashen, with Professor Williams rounding out the cast.

Tickets at $10 and $12 for “Dancing at Lughnasa” will go on sale at the box office March 28. Box office hours are from 4 - 6 pm Monday through Friday and to curtain time on show days. Call 715-735-4313 for reservations.
