Cast Chosen for "A Piece of My Heart"
December 21, 2007
The experiences of six women before, during and after the war in Vietnam are brought to life in "A Piece of My Heart" presented by Bayside Players Theatre Club in collaboration with Theatre on the Bay at UW-Marinette January 10 - 13 at 7:30 pm in the Herbert L. Williams Theatre on the campus. Tickets are $5 at the door.
Directed by Kelsey C. Djupstrom, this powerful play by Shirley Lauro is based on the true stories of six courageous women, (three nurses, one USO entertainer, one Red Cross worker and one intelligence officer) sent to Vietnam and their struggle to make sense of a war that inescapably changed them and a nation that abandoned them.
The play examines each woman’s decision to go to Vietnam, their expectations and hopes. Once in country, they are faced with the terrible reality of war. On their return from Vietnam, they have to deal with new challenges such as alcoholism and the effects of Agent Orange in addition to being shunned by a public that turned their backs on the war and those who served in it.
Djupstrom is a Marinette High graduate who attended UW-Marinette before transferring to Adelphi University in New York to study acting.
The six women in the play will be portrayed by Cassandra Moreno, Susan Vairus, Colleen Johnston, Tara Dizor, Brittany Folcik and Lori Payne-Csaki. Other roles will be taken by David Breese, Walter Burzik, and Jim Vincent.

December 19, 2007
Special projects were completed by Thursday, December 13th in Professor James LaMalfa’s Art 101-102 drawing class. Students in group two (Sean Gardon-Peshtigo, Terry Eager-Florence, and Marina Horchin-Moldova) worked on learning 3D modeling with Frank Oczus Jr.-Stehenson, MI, who will teach the subject in January through Continuing Education. Students in this group will produce a three dimensional poster, 2x3 feet on one of the school’s wide carriage plotter-printers.
Group three (Josh St. Juliana-Stephenson, MI, Mike Delisse-Marinette, George Gocht-Crivitz, Phil Goes-Marinette, Rachel Carlson-Marinette, and Jamie Chaney-Menominee), led by professor LaMalfa completed a 4 x 16 foot mural for the Distance Education classroom on the subject of “Communication.”
The artwork of each group will be displayed in the Theater gallery during January 2008.
“I had an unusually talented group of students in my ART 101-102 drawing class this fall,” said LaMalfa. “I challenged them to do more than sit in a studio and draw still life. We also discussed the role of public art, since the mural will be exhibited in the library building.”

Ward named 2008 Kaplan Fellow
December 5, 2007
Scott Ward, Assistant Dean of Administrative Services at UW-Marinette, has received the 2008 Kaplan Award.
The Kaplan Award is given to faculty or academic staff members who have made “significant and innovative improvement in instruction or in service to students,” according to former UW Colleges Chancellor Lee Grugel who established the award in honor of Arthur M. Kaplan, who served the UW Colleges as vice chancellor and provost as well as acting chancellor, until his retirement in 1993.
Ward, who served as Business Manager of the Matanuska-Sustna College campus of the University of Alaska-Anchorage before joining the UW-Marinette staff in 2001, is responsible for planning and daily management of fiscal, bursary, facilities, procurement, personnel, payroll and benefits, safety and risk management, and auxiliary and support operations at the campus.
In addition to fiscal responsibilities, Ward also assists with technology-related matters including designing the UW Colleges Staffing Plan software, an online reservation system for the campus fleet vehicles as well as other campus forms and requests for maintenance service.
In announcing the award, Dean Paula Langteau noted several examples of campus improvements Ward has overseen which include “a new theatre ticket booth, a new glassed area for the Art Gallery; new carpeting and blinds in some classrooms; the observation deck near the bay; new lightweight oblong tables for activities; new equipment for Music Lab Modernization; an extensive voicemail system; and, most recently, new energy efficient windows in the administrative suite.”
Langteau noted Ward’s level of commitment to keeping the campus running smoothly. “He was also so very willing to roll up his sleeves—quite literally—when we lost our HVAC mechanic last year and the Maintenance Supervisor retired. When the boiler alarms went off in the middle of the night several different times, it was Scott who responded by coming to campus to check on our buildings. He offered to plow snow and he worked on the boilers in addition to continuing to do his work as Assistant Dean. And, he accomplished all of this while also conducting two searches for these vacancies,” said Langteau.
Ward also oversees the management of the campus bookstore. “Under Scott’s supervision, UW-Marinette has cut the costs of books to students,” said Langteau, as well as ensuring the timely ordering of books and efficient book buy-back procedures.
Ward also works directly with students as he monitors budgets for over 16 student clubs and organizations. “He proactively explores ways to maximize student benefit from their segregated fees and then presents his ideas to Student Senate to help them make informed and wise decisions,” said Langteau.
Ward is also co-advisor to the CREW. "He participates in most events such as Chain Reaction Day, moving private individuals, and much more. He, along w/the CREW, presented at last year’s UW Colleges Leadership Conference in the Dells. Scott was instrumental in the CREW receiving the $1,000 monetary award from the Green Bay Packers," said Crew Club co-advisor Mary LaCasse.
Ward has served on the Marinette School Board and is also a member of the YMCA Board of Directors. On campus he advises the Crew Club, a community-service based student club, and most recently, chaperoned an overnight event to raise awareness of homelessness in the community.
Ward is the 19th recipient of the Kaplan Award since it was instituted in 1994. The award includes a $250 UW Colleges grant with $250 in matching funds from the UW-Marinette Foundation to be used for professional development or supplies needed to help with student recruitment and retention efforts.
