Bailey Named Kaplan Fellow
December 28, 2005

Cindy Bailey, Assistant Campus Dean for Student Services, has received the Kaplan Fellow Award at UW-Marinette for 2005-06. Kaplan Fellows are faculty or academic staff members who have made or are making “significant and innovative improvement in instruction or in service to students,” according to former UW Colleges Chancellor Lee Grugel who established the award in honor of Arthur M. Kaplan, who served the UW Colleges as vice chancellor and provost as well as acting chancellor, until his retirement in 1993.

Bailey, who is an alumna of UW-Marinette, joined the staff in 1997. She has been head of Student Services at the campus since 2002.

In citing her achievements, Student Senate President Russ From said, “Cindy works tirelessly for the best interests of students while coming up with new and innovative ways to encourage and ensure that students have a smooth transition into college.”
Campus Steering Chair Dr. Jennifer Flatt noted that Bailey “has been actively involved in the Engaging Students in the First Year Initiative from the very beginning, working closely with faculty on first-year programs even before the UW Colleges Initiative became formalized.”

Flatt also praised Bailey’s contributions as an ambassador to future students through community involvement in programs such as the Marinette/Menominee Chamber of Commerce’s Mini Business World and the M&M Area Community Foundation's Youth Advisory Committee.

Bailey has also received the Academic Staff Award, voted on by students,  every year since 1997. The Student Services staff, under her leadership, was also recognized in 2004 by the UW Colleges as a leader regarding “creativity and initiative, quality and quantity of work, reliability and responsibility, relationships with students, fellow staff and others working beyond the ‘call of duty’.”
Bailey is the 15th recipient of the Kaplan Award since it was instituted in 1994. The award includes a $500 grant to be used for professional development or supplies needed to help with student recruitment and retention efforts.
