The Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Four Novellas by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Date: May 6, 2009; 5:30 - 9:00 pm
Discussion leader: Dr. Jennifer Flatt

Although most adventures of Sherlock Holmes are short stories, the canon also includes four novellas available separately or collected in anthologies. Two of these were Conan Doyle’s very first stories about the famous detective: A Study in Scarlet (a murder mystery with links to Mormons in Utah) and The Sign of Four (a complex story of fabulous treasure tainted by a murderers’ pact in colonial British India). The remaining two novellas, The Hound of the Baskervilles (the tale of a family cursed by a ghostly dog haunting the moors) and The Valley of Fear (a cryptic message leads Holmes to a corpse and a murderer’s confession), were among his last, published in response to tremendous public outcry following Holmes’s infamous “death” at Reichenbach Falls in a struggle with his arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty. Match wits with literature’s greatest detective, and spend an evening solving some of the most imaginative mysteries ever written. The game’s afoot!
