FINANCIAL AID
Financial aid is available to registered students with demonstrated need. Full-time students carrying at least 12 credits are eligible for maximum aid. Students must enroll for at least six credits to be eligible for limited aid. The Office of Financial Aid for the 13 Colleges determines the kind and amount of financial aid for each student. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed by each applicant for financial assistance. The FAFSA can be obtained in the Office of Student Services. Listed below are the steps to follow to apply for financial aid:
Application Procedures:
If you wish to be considered for financial aid, you must complete the following:
- Be enrolled at last half-time (6 cr.) during a semester
- Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which comes with complete instructions and mailing directions. This form takes approximately four to six weeks for processing, so it should be filed as soon as possible. This application may be obtained from your high school counselor or by request from UW Marinette's Student Services Office.
- If changes are made, submit your Student Aid Report (SAR) to UW Marinette's Student Services Office. This form determines your eligibility for the Pell Grant and other financial aid programs. The SAR will be mailed to you approximately six to eight weeks after submitting your FAFSA. Be sure to sign page 2 of Part 1.
- You may be asked to submit additional financial information after your SAR is submitted. Once the information in your financial aid file is complete, the information will be reviewed and you will be sent either a financial aid offer or a denial notice.
- After you return your award letter you should expect financial aid checks to be sent to the Business Office within two weeks or the beginning of the semester, whichever is later.
- To remain eligible for financial aids, see Academic Regulations and Procedures: Satisfactory Progress Standards.
Warning to Students seeking financial aid over the Internet
Some students seek help on the Internet at http://fafsa.com to apply for financial aid. Even though this service claims to be a member of a better business bureau, and to have been in business for 28 years, their FAFSA charges range from $49 to $189 for "expert" help and/or faster application times.
Please always remember the rule of thumb: NO ONE SHOULD EVER PAY FOR ANY TYPE OF FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION OR SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH. THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR APPLYING FOR STUDENT FINACIAL AID.Students (and their parents and advisors) should be using http://fafsa.ed.gov.
In all fairness, if you scroll to the bottom of the fafsa.com site, this service does offer a link to applying free on line, BUT it does so with the warning of "delays" and "pitfalls." No one has a special means by which to get the feds to process applications more quickly. Likewise, our student services/financial aid advisors have all the information their "experts" have. There are no secrets here. The best thing students can do is to read all instructions carefully and fill out their applications adequately and completely.

Veterans Benefits
Veterans benefits are available to qualified veterans, members of the National guard or Reserves, and, in some cases, to the sons, daughters, or spouses of deceased or disabled veterans. There are a wide variety of veterans programs available through both the federal Veterans Administration and through the State of Wisconsin. Contact the local Veterans Administration Office of the campus students services office for details.
In compliance with Veterans Administration (VA) regulations, the VA will be notified within 30 days of any change in enrollment. Monthly VA checks are prorated if the veteran initially enrolls for less than a full-time credit load (11 credits or less). A change in enrollment also may affect the amount of monthly checks.
Veterans and veterans' dependents are required to meet academic progress standards in order to receive VA benefits.
