UW Colleges Department of Music

Throughout recorded history, music has chronicled man's social and psychological development, identifying it as universal art. But music also has the ability to link our intellect, emotions and senses, transforming it into personal art. Majoring in music enhances your understanding and knowledge of music both universally and personally.

A major in music at UW-Marinette emphasizes the development of concepts and skills. No matter what musical career you pursue, several capabilities are needed: a high level of technical competence, a broad knowledge of music and music literature, sensitivity to musical style, an insight into the role and effect music has on society and the awareness of one's place in the cultural environment.

UW-Marinette offers music majors the essential courses that serve as the foundation for advanced study. In addition, there are opportunities for individual development vocally and instrumentally. Students may also join the Jazz Ensemble, the Northeast Wisconsin Concert Band, the Bay Shore Orchestra, the West Shore Chorale or the UW-Marinette vocal ensemble.

Careers in music offer a variety of choices including teaching at all levels and performing in a variety of venues. Career opportunities also exist in related fields such as composing, music therapy, broadcasting and arts managment.

In the music industry, positions include marketing, composing, conducting, publishing, recording engineer, music critic, musical instrument technician and music copywriter. Also, the use of computers in the music industry is constantly evolving, offering new occupations for the music major.
