Department of World Languages: Language Opportunities

The UW-Marinette World Language Department periodically hosts conversation hours which allow students of languages taught on campus to gather and practice language skills in a relaxed environment. Conversation hours are open to students, faculty, and staff of UW-Marinette as well as to members of the community who wish to use or practice their world language skills. Free food helps to create a comfortable atmosphere and speakers of all ability levels are welcome-from beginner to expert, from novice to native. For more information about upcoming conversation opportunities, or to be added to the contact list for upcoming events, contact Jennifer Flatt at 735-4332.

In addition to these regular course offerings, Continuing Education classes (not for college credit) in many languages such as Greek, Russian, German, Japanese, French and Spanish are frequently offered during the evening hours. Schedules of these non-credit classes are available through the Continuing Education Extension office. Phone 715-735-4342.

The Youth for Understanding program (YFU) brings students from a variety of language backgrounds to UW-Marinette for a semester or the school year. In recent years, YFU students with native languages such as Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Danish have studied on-campus. Contact Tina Oman at 735-4355 to learn about opportunities to have YFU students make cultural or language presentations. The presence of YFU students on campus also allows native English speakers studying Spanish or German at UW-Marinette to practice language skills with a native speaker.
