Why study a world language? Language is a vehicle for understanding and appreciating different cultures, crucial to many workers in a global economy and in working with the diverse population of the United States. Language majors bring critical thinking, reading, and writing skills gained through a liberal arts education to a variety of fields.
Language majors become specialists in communication, often enhancing their English skills as they study a foreign language. Many employers recognize that those who have studied a foreign language have strong communication skills and a great understanding of and respect for cultural differences.
Some universities in Wisconsin and across the nation now require two years of a single foreign language during high school or two semesters at the college level in order to be accepted for admission or for graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Courses offered at UW-Marinette can fulfill these requirements.
UW-Marinette offers the first four semesters of Spanish taught on campus and the first four semester of German taught via distance education using two-way video.
Students who have previous experience with the language can test into a class at the level appropriate to their knowledge and skills. If a student receives a grade of B or higher in the class into which he or she tested, that student receives retroactive credits for the language courses below that number. For example, if a student tests into third semester Spanish (201) and receives a grade of B or higher in that class, that student receives credit for Spanish 101, 105, and 201. The office of Student Services has more information about foreign language placement exams.
