Students who major in communication arts often do so to prepare for work where written and oral communiation are the defining skills. Taking introductory courses acquaints students with the basics of communication processes which can then be applied to more spcialized study.
Radio/TV majors prepare for one of the annoucner/newscaster or production positions in the highly competitive electronic media. They need to be
knowledgeable in news, business, health care, politics and consumer issues. They may work as news anchors or weathercasters, reporters or sportscasters.They may eventually host talk shows or become on-air radio personalities.
Journalism majors are trained to gather information and prepare stories about local, state, national and international events. Journalists may work for newspapers, magazines, radio, television or wire services. On-line services and te Internet are developing into major employers for people who can write rapidly and use technology.
Public relations and advertising majors often study journalism and then use that knowledge to work in the private sector or as part of the business staff of a media company. PR and advertising positions are found in all sectors of the economy, both private and public.
Speech and communicative disorders majors may work in an allied health profession if their chosen field is helping people deliver a clearer message. Speech therapists are employed in a medical and school settings.
Actors communicate their interpretation of dramatic roles in motion pictures, television films and the theatre. Many work with professional agents to find roles.
UW-Marinette's theatre program is one of the strongest in the UW Colleges with a 36-year history of top-notch theatre for winter and summer seasons.
