Chemists are scientists who study the composition, structure and change of matter. They are often involved in the discovery or synthesis of new compounds and in the producttion of many consumer products: food additives, pharmaceuticals, plastics, etc.

Individuals earning a degree in chemistry can expect to work for chemical manufacturing industries (i.e., chemical plants, food companies, pharmaceutical companies, paper industries, petroleum industries, etc.). Opportunities for employment also exist in government and research laboratories.

The facilities at the University of Wisconsin-Marinette are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments used in the separation and identification of chemical compounds. Instruments typically used by students include gas chromatographs, infrared spectrophotometers, and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometers. In addition, the chemistry laboratory is equipped with computers to assist in the acquisition and analysis of experimental data.

Classes usually offered for the chemistry major at UW-Marinette include:

CHE 124 Natural Science Chemistry
CHE 125 Introductory Chemistry
CHE 145 General Chemistry
CHE 155 General Chemistry
CHE 203 Survey of Biochemistry
CHE 211 Biochemistry Laboratory
