Adult Student Week at UW-Marinette
October 27, 2010

Education is Key to Earning Higher Wages. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "All of the increase in employment over the past two decades has been among workers who have taken at least some college classes or who have associate or bachelor's degrees—and mostly among workers with bachelor's degrees. The number of these college-educated workers has increased almost every year. Over the 1992–2009 period, the number of college-educated workers increased from 27 million to 44 million."

At UW-Marinette, November 8-12 has been designated as Adult Student Week to acknowledge those students who either begin their college careers as older adults or who return to the classroom seeking to increase their knowledge in their current field or to change careers.

During Adult Student Week, two events will be held to help adults navigate the waters of higher education.

Adult Info Day on Wednesday, November 10 will be an afternoon (from 12 - 6 pm) dedicated by Adult Student Services Coordinator Mary Voyles to meeting with adult students one-on-one to discuss career goals, financial aid, programs, and resources. Call 715-735-4301 to make an appointment or just stop by the Student Services office at UW-Marinette.

The Fall College Fair will be held on Thursday, November 11 in the cafeteria. Prospective students are welcome to stop by anytime between 3 and 6 pm to talk with representatives from 14 different public, private and technical colleges and universities, and community resource programs. They include UW-Green Bay Adult Degree Program, UW-Green Bay-BSN Completion Program, UW-Marinette, UW-Milwaukee Connections Program, UW-Oshkosh Center for New Learning, UW-Stevens Point Collaborative Degree Program, UW-Superior, Bellin College, Concordia University, Lakeland College, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Silver Lake College, UW-Extension Nutrition Education Program, and NEWCAP Tuition Assistance Program.

UW-Marinette has many options for those who want to complete Bachelor Degree programs without traveling long distances to classes or relocating. "We are here to help people advance in their professional lives or just realize a lifelong dream of obtaining a college degree," says Voyles.

At the College Fair, prospective students can learn about the admissions process, financial aid, bachelor’s degree requirements, transferring degree credits from other colleges, flexible schedules and on-line classes.

“Stop in to meet with reps from each campus and learn about what these schools have to offer, including distance education opportunities,” said Voyles. For more information, contact Voyles at 715-735-4301 or register on-line at www.marinette.uwc.edu.

Service Learning at UW-Marinette
October 26, 2010

The new AmeriCorps/VISTA volunteer at UW-Marinette, Lesley Shreves, has jumped into the service learning initiatives begun by her predecessor, Roxann Pazdera, without breaking stride. “My work involves forming sustainable community partnerships with the University and local schools to give young people the skills, knowledge and desire to go on to post-secondary education,” said Shreves. “We’ve completed one service learning project already and expect to finish two more this fall.”

Shreves is no stranger to service learning herself. During college she volunteered with the Winnebago County Literacy Council. “I tutored three children, ages 8, 5 and 3, of a woman from Sudan who was learning English as a second language,” said Shreves, a native of Delavan, Wisconsin, and recent graduate of UW-Oshkosh with a major in Communications and Spanish.

Shreves’ first service learning project paired UW-Marinette students in Prof. Dorothy Kowalski’s HES 206 (Personal Health and Wellness) with two Marinette Middle School health classes taught by Tony LaMalfa.

“The project was about substance abuse,” said Shreves. The UW-Marinette students met with the Middle School students and helped them create a powerpoint about celebrities that have passed away due to substance abuse. Then they helped the Middle School students create posters highlighting what they had learned from those sessions,” said Shreves.

Shreves said the project had several goals. “The hope of the program is that the students would just say no to drugs and alcohol and that they would start to think about what they want to do in the future. They were able to practice some skills that will help them in college and for lifelong learning: doing research, working in teams, and communicating what they learned.”

A project with Profs. Mark Klemp and Keith West’s LEC 100 (What to Expect in Lab Courses) is currently paired with Ruth Maguire’s “Introduction to Biology” class at Marinette High School. “We have state-of-the-art sensors that we use for real-time measurements and data-gathering,” said West. “Our students are basically teaching the high school students how to use equipment for stream monitoring. I think it’s working beautifully. We’ve gone to the high school to talk about invasive species such as phragmites and today we showed them how to use the monitoring equipment. I was pleased with the confidence that our students had in showing the high school students how to use the equipment. And I was happy to see how attentive the high school students were.”

Next Monday, the high school students will come to UW-Marinette to actually use the equipment in the stream that runs through campus to the bay.

Shreves noted that half of the LEC 100 class is comprised of students from other countries, “so there will be an intercultural aspect to the project too,” said Shreves.

The third project slated for this fall will involve students from Prof. Jane Oitzinger’s PHI 244 (Environmental Ethics) course with students from Marinette Middle School.

“Her [Oitzinger] students will create a lesson plan based on an environmental case study appropriate for the level of the student they will be teaching. From there they can mold the lesson into whatever they think will engage the student,” said Shreves.

Shreves’ service as an AmeriCorps/VISTA volunteer at UW-Marinette is limited to one year. When asked about future plans, she spoke about her study abroad semester in college. “I attended a full-immersion language school in Guanajuato, Mexico, through ISA (International Study Abroad) because I wanted to focus on working with Spanish-speaking populations,” says Shreves. “I’d still like to return to Mexico to teach English. A masters program in Spanish is also a possibility.”

“Bread Baking for Beginners” at UW Marinette Continuing Ed
October 26, 2010

The popular “Bread Baking for Beginners” class will again be offered by UW-Marinette Continuing Education on Saturday, November 13, from 9:30am to 1:30pm in the Cafeteria in the Main Building on campus. The cost of the class is just $29. Participants should bring their favorite sandwich topping to add to fresh, homemade bread provided in the class.

Baking bread is more art than science as instructor Bill Huntley uses simple techniques to show you how to make bread that requires no measuring cups or loaf pans, and certainly no bread machines. In this hands-on class you will create and take home your own bread dough to bake after class.

“Be prepared to roll up your sleeves, knead some dough and create your own masterpieces such as free-form bread for the oven or grill, pizza crust, bread sticks and dinner rolls” says Huntley. “Making bread doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little practice you can enjoy the heavenly smell of warm, homemade bread fresh from the oven anytime you want.”

Registration for “Breadmaking for Beginners” is available online at http://www.marinette.uwc.edu/continuinged/. Deadline for registration is November 5. To learn more, contact UW-Marinette Continuing Education at sharon.huntley@uwc.edu

UW-Marinette Blood Drive October 29
October 22, 2010

UW-Marinette’s fall blood drive, sponsored by the Student Ambassadors, will be held on Friday, October 29 from 9 am to 2 pm in the Student Union of the Main Building.

Ninety-five percent of Americans will need a blood product in their lifetime, yet only three percent of the people who are eligible to give blood actually do. To the millions of patients who need blood every year, these blood donors are uncommon heroes. They join the ranks of firemen, police, emergency medical workers and others who give of themselves every day to help save the lives of complete strangers. They are needed now more than ever.

Please call 735-4301 to make an appointment to give blood. Walk-ins are also welcome. Visit www.redcrossblood.com for more information about giving blood.

"Proof" Opens November 12 at Theatre on the Bay
October 19, 2010

David Auburn’s gripping drama “Proof,” which has been described by critic Dave Bayer as a “love letter to mathematics,” will be seen on Theatre on the Bay's Nancy Gehrke stage November 12-14 and 19-21. Curtain time is 7:30 pm Friday and Saturday and 2 pm Sunday. Tickets are $12 and $8 on sale at Angeli Foods beginning October 29 and one hour before curtain at the box office at UW-Marinette’s Herbert L. Williams Theatre. Seating is in the round and will be limited to 50 per performance.

Directed by TOB’s artistic director Simon Jon Provan, the play explores themes of life, love and loss using the device of a mathematical theorem. “It is rich with multiple layers of meaning” says Provan. “Don't be fooled, it is not a play about math. Though playwright David Auburn uses mathematics as a catalyst for the story, he has written a compelling piece of theater that, at its core, deals with family difficulties, conflicting beliefs of caring for aging parents, suspicion, and perhaps most importantly, the issue of trust. It is as engaging to watch as it is to direct. Add to that the work the cast and crew has already put into the show, this production will definitely prove to be a don't miss, engaging night of theater.”

In 2001, a year after its debut on Broadway, “Proof” was awarded the Drama Desk Award for Best New Play, the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Best Play, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the Tony Award for Best Play.

The play focuses on Catherine (Becca Wubben), who took care of her father (Provan), after his mental disorder forced him to give up his successful career as a mathematician. Following her father's death, his former student (Lucas Veness) finds the proof of an important theorem among the mathematician's belongings and the plot revolves around the questions of the authorship of "the proof." In fact, the title can be seen as referring either to the mathematical proof itself, or more generally the question of whether the daughter can prove that it was actually written by her. Catherine’s sister Claire (Leah LaMalfa) arrives to help her sister who had managed her father’s care by herself.

UW-Marinette sophomores, Wubben is a graduate from St. Thomas Aquinas Academy and LaMalfa is a Marinette High School graduate. Veness, who is a Pulaski graduate, is a freshman at UW-Marinette. Tristan Schuh is the assistant director and Jenna Sperberg, the stage manager. ###

Wisconsin plays an important role in the chemical industry. In addition to a strong industrial base, Wisconsin is the home of significant players in specialty chemicals. In 2006, when Resilience Capital Partners acquired ChemDesign Corp. and formed ChemDesign Products, Inc., Mielke assumed the role of President and CEO.
