Nationwide Math Competition Results Announced
May 20, 2011
Results of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) Mathematics League Competition were announced by team advisor Mike Bartlett, Associate Professor of Mathematics at UW-Marinette at the annual Awards Banquet held May 6 at the Little River Country Club.
The Student Mathematics League was founded in 1970 by Nassau Community College in New York. In 1981 the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges assumed sponsorship of the competition. This year more than 243 Colleges nation-wide competed. This included colleges ranging in student numbers from over 20,000 to campuses the size of UW-Marinette with a student population of 524. This is the sixth year that UW-Marinette has entered a team.
“This year we had some stiff competition plus the size of our team pool was smaller than other years. We could only field 5 students to compete in both rounds of the competition. These 5 are to be really congratulated for persisting through both rounds of a particularly tough competition this year,” said Bartlett.
In the first round held in the fall semester, the UW-Marinette team ranked 166th nation-wide. In round 2 held in the spring semester the team rallied and ranked 148th moving up 18 positions,” said Bartlett.
This year’s team consisted of Molly Gerarden, Sean Hallfrisch and Jacqueline Morales or Menominee; and Richard Rocque and John Kalafut of Marinette.
“The UW-Marinette team top scorer when combining both rounds was John Kalafut who was awarded the Farmers & Merchants cash prize of $100 by Tom Maxwell, bank president.

May 20, 2011
UW-Marinette campus will be closed Monday, May 23 for a state-mandated employee furlough day. All campus buildings and offices will be closed and no functions will be scheduled.
The state-mandated furlough day is one of 16 unpaid furlough days required of all state employees in the 2009-2011 state budget biennium. May 23 was chosen as a mandatory furlough day because it would have minimal impact on students, staff, and the community.
The first 3-week and 6-week sessions of summer classes will begin Thursday, May 26. Registration is still open for those sessions and others which begin June 17 and July 11. The Student Services office is open from 8 am to 4:30 pm weekdays for advising and registration for classes. Call 715-735-4301 for an appointment.

Theatre on the Bay Fundraising Begins
May 20, 2011
UW-Marinette's Theatre on the Bay and Children's Theatre are beginning the 45th season with a call for funding from patrons and advertisers who make the season possible.
"Theatre on the Bay has been a mainstay in our communities, providing high quality entertainment and enrichment for residents, education for our children, and a draw for tourists and business transplants, which helps grow our economy since 1967," says UW-Marinette Dean Paula Langteau.
Theatre on the Bay supporters will see their ads and names in the program not just for the summer, but for the entire season from July to March.
One of Broadway's great musicals, “Chicago” will open the season July 21-24 & 28-31. Based on a real-life sensational murder case from the 1920s, “Chicago,” with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, brings a sassy, brassy period in American history to life with jazz, torch songs, crooners and dancers. “Chicago” has received 6 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations since its debut in 1975. F. Reed Brown, TOB guest director and assistant professor in the UW-Eau Claire Music and Theatre Arts Department, will direct the production.
The Continuing Education Children’s Theatre director Jaime Schwaba will direct two plays this year including the popular “Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, Jr.” October 15-16 and 22-23, and “Famous Fairy Tales” February 4 & 5.
Theatre on the Bay will also welcome its newest Artistic Director, Rebecca Stone Thornberry, who joins the faculty in the fall as assistant professor of Communications and Theatre Arts. She will direct a romantic comedy “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani November 11-13 and 18-20, and “The Diary of Anne Frank” March 2-4 and 9-11.
Theatre on the Bay and UW-Marinette’s Continuing Education Children's Theatre depend on the support of the community through ticket sales and donations. The campus, Marinette County and the State of Wisconsin provide a stage, basic equipment, maintenance, publicity services and business management, but no other support for productions. Production budgets include costs for royalties, scripts, orchestra, director and staff, set design and construction, lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, promotional materials as well as maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment.
In exchange for donations, businesses and individuals may advertise or have their name listed in the 45th season program book, which will be seen by all theatre patrons during the year. In addition to donations, special Above-the-Title sponsorships are available which include one's business listed in the program booklet and in all promotional materials and press releases for the play one chooses to sponsor. Contributions to the TOB endowment are also being accepted.
To make a donation, arrange an advertisement, become a sponsor, or make an endowment contribution, contact Maureen Frawley at UW-Marinette, 715-735-4310 or email maureen.frawley@uwc.edu. The deadline for inclusion in the TOB season program booklet is June 12.
